Met Mama Tere in Mangaia (Au’au Enua) from the village of Oneroa, who weaves baskets, hats and mats from coconut leaves, picks maire for export to Hawaii. She is a hard working working woman indeed who looks for ways to supplement her income through various means, as there really is not much/or no employment at all in the outer islands of the Cook Islands.
On this ocassion (April 2012) she gave me permission to video record the skills of hat weaving she aquired as a youngster. First she cut a branch from a coconut tree, counted the number of leaves she wanted to weave and cut the rest off. And so begins a passion, a skill, a necessity that many young ones could easily aquire to make a modest living in the Cook Islands.
